Burton stunk. That was our first impression of the place. The whole town was permeated with the acrid odor of something unfamiliar—it made the air feel heavy, sticky... and dirty, if one can say that about the air.

Because of this stench, our arrival in Jadame almost spiraled into a big scandal in the very first minutes we set feet on its land. We had been through a lot on the way, and many of us had taken the journey very hard. And still, the moment we were on solid ground and taking in the air of the new world, the Eeofolian refugees cried out as one that they hated the place, and demanded that we keep going. I had no idea what to say to them, so I just looked at Frederick. I could see how great a toll it took on him to be forced into the company of the villagers, who kept pestering him with their ill-placed complaints and requests. Now I saw his face growing purpler with every new shout from the crowd, and I knew that an outburst could not be avoided.

However, the storm came in from an unexpected direction. From behind the scholar's back strutted a short, stout woman, her sleeves rolled up. She appeared to be his Jadamean colleague, Sam—he had told me a little about her on the way. On her face, I could see fatigue mingle with anger, and sadness with determination. She put her fists at her sides, looked Frederick in the eye, and shouted hoarsely:

“Frederick, old fella! I sure expected you to come sooner or later, and not just you; you were bound to go for it and come to lie low at the bottom of our hole! But whoa, if there isn't more of you here than armadillos on old Donald's ranch... Well, hulloa to you, dear guests. My grandfather's grandfather had spent forty years looking for a place to put down roots in this land. And you know what? He found the only place for hundreds of miles around that didn't stink. And then the Ogres came and took his head off—thank the gods that the old fool had fathered some sons by then, who scattered to the eight winds as soon as they grew up. My father's grandfather wasn’t one for grand ideas—the place where he settled stank just like everywhere else around here, but it was a good spot to fight off enemies. My father's father found out the source of the stench—see the old fountain over there? He dug a well to get water for it, but it spewed out earth oil instead. That's what makes this place reek. My father figured out that the oil burned well, so he learned how to smelt metal with this nasty, hot fuel. And then some Ogre lads came here from places where it doesn't stink indeed, but one can't get metal for weapons and armor either. Guess what they offered him?”

“Uh, to trade the metal for something they had a lot of?” suggested one of the halflings.

“Atta boy! You got it! And you know what ogres have a lot of? Dumb brawn. Their bigwig went and smashed my dad into a puddle with his club and then said we'd better give up all the metal, so they wouldn't kill anymore in return. Maybe. Well, at least not all of us. Perhaps. If the mood strikes. Probably not, though. Anyway, he'd done a stellar job of encouraging us. Oh, by the way, lookie there, and there, and over there,” Sam made a full circle with her hand, pointing to the outskirts of the town. "Those good ol’ Ogre boys are everywhere. And over there, in a spot where it doesn't stink, lies their main fortress, where there sits one fat, slimy toad, looks like fresh armadillo crap, goes by Zog. Yeah, and there are several hundred more of his jolly good chums there. Wanna keep going? I'm not gonna beg you not to. But I can see your bubbles won't last more than a hundred miles without repairs, with all the holes and whatnot. Where you'll have to land next time, I won't even guess. To první, čím na mě Burton zapůsobil, bylo, že neuvěřitelně smrděl. Celé město bylo prostoupeno štiplavým zápachem čehosi neznámého, po čem byl vzduch těžký, špinavý a snad i lepkavý, pokud by se to tak dalo nazvat.

Právě kvůli onomu smradu náš příjezd do Jadámu málem skončil fiaskem, neboť jsme se v prvních několika minutách zdráhali vůbec vytáhnout paty z lodí. Během plavby jsme toho zažili spoustu a mnozí z nás ji nesli těžce, ale jakmile jsme měli konečně pevnou půdu pod nohama a mohli se svobodně nadechnout vzdoušku z nového světa, propadli eeofolští uprchlíci usedavému pláči a na celé kolo štkali jako jeden muž, jako by již neměli vůli žít, pokud okamžitě nevyrazíme o dům dál. Nevěděla jsem, co jim říct, a tak jsem se jen podívala na Fredericka. Bylo pro něj očividně obtížné být ustavičně vesničanům na blízku a odpovídat jim na jejich všetečné dotazy a poslouchat jejich nářky. Všimla jsem si, jak jeho obličej s každým dalším výkřikem z davu víc a víc brunátní, až jednou nepochybně vybuchne vzteky. Výbuch však přišel úplně odjinud. Zpoza vědce povystoupila podsaditá, statná žena s vykasanými rukávy. Podle všeho to byla ta jeho jadámská kolegyně Sam, o níž mi během cesty vyprávěl. V její tváři se mísila únava s hněvem a současně smutek s odhodláním. Dala si ruce v bok, sjela Fredericka pohledem od hlavy k patě a chraplavým hlasem vykřikla:

“Fredericku, ty stará vojno! Teda já jsem čekala, že sem jednoho dne nakráčíš, jen co je pravda. Když sis pořád tak koledoval, bylo jen otázkou času, kdy tě nohy zanesou až do téhle zapadlé díry, ale že vás bude víc než pásovců na statku starého Donalda... Ale což! Pěkně vítám, přátelé! Můj prapraděd tu strávil čtyřicet let hledáním místa, kde by zapustil kořeny. A víte vy co? Na stovky mil odsud našel jen jediné místo, které na hony nepáchlo! A pak přišli zlobři a ustřelili mu palici! Bohům díky, že v tu dobu už měl dávno syny, kteří se následně mohli rozutéct, kam je vítr zavál. Pradědovi to příliš nepálilo. Usadil se v místě, kde to páchlo jako všude jinde, ale zase se odtamtud dalo dobře bránit před nepřáteli. Děd to naopak zase pálilo, protože přišel na to, proč to tu tak smrdí. Vidíte tamhle tu starou kašnu? Chtěl vykopat studnu na vodu a namísto toho narazil na ropu. To kvůli ní je tu takový puch. Otec pak přišel na to, že ropa skvěle hoří, a naučil se s její pomocí tavit kovy. Potom sem nakráčeli z míst, kde to sice nepáchne, ale kde je o kovy nouze, nějací zlobři a hádejte, co mu za to dali?”

“Ehm, něco, čeho měli sami dost?” opáčil jeden z hobitů.

“Výborně, holenku, trefa! A jestlipak víte, čeho mají zlobři přehršle? Blbosti - dali mu po palici! Jejich velitel mého otce zkrátka jen rozmašíroval kyjem na kaši, načež pravil, že když mu dáme všechen kov, nikoho dalšího už nezabijí. Možná. Přinejmenším ne všechny. Možná. Pokud jim něco nezkazí náladu. Ale nejspíš ne. No každopádně odvedl skvělou práci, poněvadž nás povzbudil k usilovné práci. A mimochodem, podívejte se prosím tamhle... A teď tamhle... A ještě tamhle,” opsala Sam rukou kruh kolem sebe, ukazujíc na různá místa na předměstí města. “Ti naši milí zlobříci jsou všude, kam jen se podíváte. A tamhle, v tom místě, kde to nesmrdí, se nachází hlavní tvrz, kde dlí odporná, tlustá ropucha velká a tlustá jako pásovcovo lejno, která si říká Zog. A aby toho nebylo málo, tak má k ruce dobrou stovku sobě podobných kamarádíčků... Takže chcete-li vyrazit o dům dál, prosím, směle do toho - já vám bránit nebudu. Ale vidím, že se všemi těmi děrami a trhlinami vás ty vaše kocábky příliš daleko neodnesou. Jářku, ale co je mi do toho, že? Vy máte svých starostí dost. Doufám, že doletíte alespoň někam, kde to tolik nesmrdí, viďte?”

As the sun was getting high, the numbness we had fallen into the previous night had finally subsided. At least Frederick spoke as quickly and vigorously as before, and his eye was keenly aware of the smallest details in the chaos.

“Henrietta, I want to thank you again. Perfect timing to get me out; it seems our aliens know more about demonology than the entire Bracadan Academy. They're already summoning some pretty powerful creatures from the Elemental Plane of Fire, and I don't see them needing months of rituals, rare reagents, or the favorable position of celestial bodies to do it. If we delay any longer… I wouldn't love to see Eeofol turned into a nice balmy place like the ones where those things are coming from, through their portals and gates. You know, some of them prefer to live in active volcanoes, and this land is full of fire-breathing mountains that once became dormant but can be brought back to life."
Na obloze stoupalo slunko a ta včerejší otupělost byla konečně ta tam. Alespoň Frederick hovořil kvapně a energicky jako předtím a jeho bystrému oku zjevně neunikla ani ta nejnepatrnější maličkost nastalého zmatku.

“Chci ti znovu poděkovat, Henrietto. Ideální čas odtud vypadnout. Zdá se, že ti naši vetřelci vědí o démonologii mnohem více než celá akademie v Bracadě. Už nyní vyvolávají pěkně mocná stvoření ze Sféry ohně a pochybuji, že k tomu potřebovali měsíce obřadů, vzácná činidla nebo příznivou polohu nebeských těles. Jestli se budeme dále zdržovat… Nerad bych byl svědkem, jak se Eeofol mění v zatraceně horké místečko podobné tomu, z něhož pocházejí všechny ty bytosti. Abys věděla, některé dávají přednost životu v činných sopkách a Eeofol je jich vpravdě plný, byť dosud jen dřímají. Co ale není, může být.”
